What is Paragard?
Paragard is a small intrauterine device (IUD) developed by Teva Pharmaceuticals to provide long-term pregnancy prevention for women. The T-shaped device consists of a polyethylene frame and utilizes copper instead of hormones to prevent fertilization. The IUD was designed to last for up to 10 years after being implanted into the uterus.
Paragard was first approved by the FDA in 1984 and has been available in the US since 1988. Although the IUD is touted as a clinically-proven safe and convenient way of preventing pregnancy, there are risks associated with its use.

Lawsuits filed against Teva over breakage, injuries
Numerous women have also reported complications associated with removal of Paragard after the device broke or fractured inside them when they tried to have it removed, leading to serious injuries and the need for surgery. Since 2010, there have been more than 1,600 such reports received by the FDA.
Lawsuits are now being filed related to these complications, claiming the device is defective and that the manufacturers knew about these risks but failed to properly warn doctors and patients. In December 2020, dozens of these lawsuits across the country were consolidated in the Northern District of Georgia under Judge Leigh Martin May.
