How it Started: Zantac History

In 1983, Pfizer gained approval to sell Zantac as a prescription drug. Around 2004, Pfizer received FDA approval to sell an over-the-counter version of Zantac. Combining prescription and over-the-counter sales, Zantac became one of the world’s best-selling drugs. It wasn’t until September 2019 that an online pharmacy informed the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that dangerous levels of NDMA were detected in batches of Zantac. In response, some retailers pulled Zantac from their shelves.

Then, in April 2020, the FDA requested that all retailers remove Zantac-brand heartburn drugs, prescription and over-the-counter, from their shelves. The manufacturers of Zantac listened to the FDA’s request and ceased sales of the drug at this time.

The first Zantac lawsuits were filed in 2019.

Current Litigation Status: You Need to Act Fast

As of April 2021, there are nearly 600 cases filed in multi-district litigation (MDL) with thousands more anticipated to follow. The theories of liability in these lawsuits include:

1. Defective design. This claim alleges that manufacturers of the drug were aware that ingesting normal amounts of Zantac would create a risk of cancer.

2. Failure to properly warn users about the risks of taking the drug. The drug makers had a duty to properly warn users of the risks associated with taking the drug. Zantac lawsuits allege that the companies failed to provide such a warning.

You still have time to file a lawsuit—however, there is a statute of limitation which will apply to your case. It is important that you act fast and discuss your situation with an attorney to protect your rights and ability to file a claim. The lawyers at Constant Legal Group are here to help.
