ROUNDUP

Roundup linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, other cancers

Roundup is one of the most widely used weed killers in the world. It was originally developed by Monsanto and marketed for use in 1974 to manage weed growth across a variety of commercial and residential applications.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, was classified as carcinogenic in humans by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2015. Other studies have linked glyphosate exposure to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers.

What is non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma?

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is a type of cancer that starts in the lymphatic system and generally involves the presence of cancerous lymphocytes in the lymph nodes. The disease can spread to other parts of the lymphatic system, though, including the tonsils, spleen, thymus and bone marrow. Common symptoms of NHL include:

  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Abdominal pain or swelling
  • Chest pain
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss

NHL is the seventh most common cancer among adults in the US, with over 200,000 diagnoses on average each year.  There are dozens of subtypes of NHL, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, and chronic lymphocytic lymphoma.

About the case

The IARC’s 2015 glyphosate classification as a probable human carcinogen prompted a wave of litigation against Monsanto, as tens of thousands of plaintiffs accused the company of failing to warn about the risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers associated with exposure to Roundup. The lawsuits were consolidated in multidistrict litigation in the Northern District of California in October 2016.

After losing three consecutive jury trials for combined damages of $191 million, Bayer AG, which acquired Monsanto in 2018, announced last June that it will pay up to $10.9 billion to settle the vast majority of the current Roundup litigation. The deal would cover nearly 75% of the roughly 125,000 pending lawsuits and the company has also said it is setting aside an additional $4.5 billion for future claims.

Bayer CEO Werner Baumann issued a statement regarding the settlement announcement, “First and foremost, the Roundup settlement is the right action at the right time for Bayer to bring a long period of uncertainty to an end.” Bayer further announced that the company has decided to remove glyphosate products from the US market by 2023.
